What this calculates

This converts speed between road units, scientific units and the knot, which is still the standard at sea and in the air. The knot is the interesting one: it is one nautical mile per hour, and a nautical mile is 1,852 metres — defined as one minute of latitude along a meridian. That geographic definition is precisely why it survives. A navigator working from a chart can read distance directly off the latitude scale in the margin, which no other unit allows.

How it works

Each unit has a factor in metres per second. Miles per hour is 1609.344 metres divided by 3,600 seconds, giving exactly 0.44704. Kilometres per hour is 1000 ÷ 3600, or 0.2777…, a repeating decimal. Knots are 1852 ÷ 3600 = 0.5144… The conversion multiplies by the source factor and divides by the target, the same as any other linear scale.

Worked example

A 60 mph highway speed in kilometres per hour: 60 × 0.44704 ÷ 0.27778 = 96.56 km/h — which is why a 100 km/h limit sign feels close to 60 mph without being it. In metres per second, 60 mph is 26.8 m/s. And a common rough conversion worth knowing: multiplying km/h by 0.62 gives mph to within half a percent, which is accurate enough for reading a foreign speed limit at a glance.

Common mistakes

Treating a knot as a nautical mile — it is a *speed*, so "knots per hour" is a unit of acceleration and almost never what anyone means. Second, applying the rough 0.6 factor in the wrong direction, which turns 100 km/h into 160 mph rather than 62. Third, confusing mph with m/s in physics problems; they differ by a factor of about 2.24 and both are commonly abbreviated carelessly. Fourth, and more subtle: average speed over a journey is not the average of the speeds. Driving out at 30 mph and back at 60 mph over the same route averages 40 mph, not 45, because you spend twice as long at the slower speed. Averaging speeds correctly means dividing total distance by total time, which is a different calculation from the one most people reach for.
