What this calculates

This answers the last question in the sequence: given a solution of known strength and a dose you have already been given, what mark on the syringe does that correspond to? It is a division followed by a multiplication, and it is the point where a mistake becomes physical — the number this page produces is the number someone stops the plunger at. Everything it needs comes from you: the concentration from the vial label or from a reconstitution you performed, and the dose from a prescription, a label, or a clinician. The page has no opinion about either.

How it works

Volume is the dose divided by the concentration, with both first converted to the same mass unit. A 250 mcg dose from a 2.5 mg/mL solution is 0.25 mg ÷ 2.5 mg/mL = 0.1 mL. That volume is then multiplied by the syringe scale to give a reading: on a U-100 barrel, 0.1 mL is 10 units. The two-step structure matters because the syringe measures volume while the dose is expressed as a mass — the concentration is the only thing connecting them, and it is different for every vial and every reconstitution.

Worked example

Suppose the solution is 2.5 mg/mL and the dose you have been directed to take is 250 mcg. Convert the dose to milligrams: 250 ÷ 1,000 = 0.25 mg. Divide by the concentration: 0.25 ÷ 2.5 = 0.1 mL. On a U-100 syringe that is 0.1 × 100 = 10 units. On a U-40 syringe, the same 0.1 mL is only 4 marks — the volume is identical, the reading is not, which is why the scale is an input rather than an assumption.

Common mistakes

Mixing mass units between the two fields is the most common: entering the concentration in mg/mL and the dose in mcg without switching the unit selector understates the result by a thousand. Second is reading the syringe in the wrong scale, as above. Third is carrying a units figure over from a previous vial — a new vial, or the same powder reconstituted with a different volume, changes the concentration and therefore changes the reading for the identical dose. Recalculate for each vial rather than reusing a remembered number.

Common questions

Why does the tool ask for the concentration rather than the vial size?
Because the syringe reading depends on concentration, which depends on both the vial contents and how much diluent was added. If you know the vial size and diluent volume instead, use the injection volume calculator, which does both steps.
What if my dose is already in millilitres?
Then no conversion is needed — multiply by the syringe scale directly. 0.4 mL is 40 units on a U-100 barrel.
